All freshmen in the College of Science and Engineering take part in the First Year Experience (FYE). FYE is an opportunity to discover your future in science and engineering. Explore the many ways you can learn and grow as a student in CSE. Look at the road ahead—and get yourself ready for a successful trip to your destination!
The First Year Experience course is a 1-credit required course focused on experiential learning taught by professional staff at the University of Minnesota. The FYE course is made possible through the financial support of a 3M Experiential Learning gift.
CSE 1001
The FYE course focuses on the following themes:
Common Reading
CSE 1001 students will pilot the common reading program this academic year. The common reading program serves to foster a sense of community among CSE students, provide a shared intellectual experience, and create dialog between students, faculty and staff. Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell will serve as the 2012 common reading for CSE 1001. Students are challenged to use the knowledge gained from Outliers to enhance their experience in the College of Science and Engineering. Books will be available at the University of Minnesota bookstore for purchase.
CSE 1001H
CSE 1001H students will also have a common reading across all of the Honors sections of 1001. In Ignorance: How It Drives Science, neuroscientist Stuart Firestein makes provocative claims about the nature of scientific inquiry. This reading will guide a semester-long exploration of the discovery process. Books will be available at the University of Minnesota bookstore for purchase.
