Three CEGE faculty research automated vehicles

Automated vehicle technologies are closer and more practical than ever before. They promise numerous and broad benefits in terms of safety and efficiency. The next steps are to integrate these new technologies safely into our existing transportation infrastructure. In CEGE, researchers Alireza Khani, Michael Levin, and Raphael Stern are studying the integration of autonomous vehicles (AVs) with transit, intersection controls, and traffic streams.

Renee Sailor, a student and a leader

“I never specifically sought out leadership roles, but as I pursued what I liked, things tend to work out that way.” At the University of Minnesota, Sailor took on leadership roles in several groups. Sailor has been part of Steel Bridge Team, treasurer of APWA, and is currently Captain of the Concrete Canoe Team and President of ASCE Student Chapter.

Bret Weiss Takes Action to Diversify CE

Bret Weiss (P.E., BCE 1987) realized that if his company, WSB, wanted to hire under-represented groups, it couldn’t rely on referrals from existing employees, nor count on technical school programs, which can be prohibitively expensive. They needed to recruit and introduce people to the field. After two years of planning, WSB launched a four-month, free-of-charge evening class in surveying and materials testing. It offers a stepping stone to high-demand jobs.
