Dr. Gilda Barabino delivers 9th annual Amundson Lecture

Apr 18, 2023 - We were pleased to welcome Dr. Gilda Barabino, President of Olin College of Engineering, to the department as the 9th annual Amundson Lecturer last week. She delivered her seminar, "Impact-Centered Research and Education: View from a Chemical Engineer," on April 13. The concept of impact-centered research and education is focused on creating real-world authentic impact in service of society and making the world a better place.

CEMS students win President's Student Leadership and Service Awards

Apr 13, 2023 - Four CEMS students are among the recipients of the 2023 President's Student Leadership and Service Awards (PSLSA). Congratulations to Marisa Bazzi (fifth-year MSE graduate student), Spencer Bingham (fourth-year MSE graduate student), Ashlie Hamilton (MSE '24), and Amy Wesolowski (ChE '23). These awards honor outstanding students for their invaluable leadership and service to the University of Minnesota Twin Cities and the community.

CEMS student named 2023 Goldwater Scholar

Apr 5, 2023 - Fred Tutt, a junior undergraduate student majoring in materials science and chemistry, has been named a 2023 Goldwater Scholar by the Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation. The prestigious, competitive scholarship is awarded annually to outstanding sophomores and juniors who intend to pursue research-oriented careers in mathematics, the natural sciences, and engineering.

Apr 4, 2023 - Several CEMS students and recent alumni received awards through the National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP). The program recognizes and supports outstanding graduate students in NSF-supported science, technology, engineering, and mathematics disciplines who are pursuing research-based Master's and doctoral degrees at accredited United States institutions.

University of Minnesota to offer new Data Science for Chemical Engineering and Materials Science master’s degree

Mar 8, 2023 - In fall 2023, the University of Minnesota Twin Cities College of Science and Engineering will begin offering a new master’s degree in data science for chemical engineering and materials science to meet the growing industry demand for scientists and engineers with computational and data analytics skills.

Associate Professor Vivian Ferry awarded an International Institute for Biosensing grant

Mar 22 2023 - Associate Professor Vivian Ferry was recently awarded a $225,000 grant for her research proposal, "Selective detection of chiral pesticides with plasmonic metasurfaces using surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy" as part of the International Institute for Biosensing (IIB), a new globally-engaged institute at the University of Minnesota focused on advancing biosensing research.

CEMS team wins 2023 TMS Materials Bowl

Mar 21 2023 - For the second year in a row, a team of CEMS students won the The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS) Materials Bowl, a materials-themed knowledge and trivia competition, held at the TMS Annual Meeting & Exhibition. To compete, each school's Material Advantage (MA) chapter can assemble a team of four chapter members and one graduate student to represent their school.

CEMS graduate student Yi "Johnny" Zhang wins prestigious Ovshinsky Student Travel Award

Mar 16 2023 - Yi "Johnny" Zhang, a fifth-year materials science Ph.D. student in Professor Chris Leighton's research group, recently won an Ovshinsky Student Travel Award to participate in the 2023 American Physical Society March Meeting, sponsored by the Division of Materials Physics. Zhang presented his work on the chemical vapor transport (CVT) crystal growth and thermal properties of the delafossite material PdCoO2.
