Ed Cussler and Abhoyjit Bhown Co-Author The Energy Transition: A Primer
CEMS Emeritus Professor Ed Cussler and alumnus Dr. Abhoyjit Bhown (PhD ’90) have co-authored a new book, The Energy Transition: A Primer. The book offers an accessible, yet technically grounded introduction to the challenges and opportunities of transitioning to sustainable energy.
Cussler and Bhown’s new book explores how energy is produced and used, its environmental impacts, and the potential of renewable sources such as solar and wind. While renewable energy can be more efficient and cost-effective, challenges like large-scale energy storage remain. During the transition, technologies like carbon capture and storage can also cost-effectively reduce carbon dioxide emissions. Rather than prescribing solutions, the book equips readers with the scientific literacy needed to understand energy systems and make informed decisions about decarbonization and sustainability.
The authors bring decades of expertise to the topic. Ed Cussler, an Emeritus Professor at CEMS, has written more than 250 articles and five books and served as President of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE). His current research focuses on producing ammonia from stranded wind energy. Abhoyjit Bhown, Senior Program Manager at the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), leads the carbon management team, conducting computational studies, laboratory experiments, pilot-scale designs, and field implementations. His work focuses on novel power cycles, CO₂ capture, and CO₂ storage.
The Energy Transition: A Primer will be published in January 2026, and is now available for pre-order.
