Professor Bharat Jalan Elected Secretary/Treasurer of APS Division of Materials Physics

CEMS Professor Bharat Jalan has been elected Secretary/Treasurer of the American Physical Society’s (APS) Division of Materials Physics (DMP). He will take office in March 2026.

Established in 1984, the APS Division of Materials Physics applies fundamental condensed matter physics concepts to complex and multiphase materials, including those of significant technological interest. The division plays a key role in advancing research and fostering collaboration across the materials physics field.

Jalan has been an active member of APS for many years and currently serves as an elected DMP Member-at-Large, contributing to division governance and strategic planning. He is widely recognized for his contributions to materials physics at the intersection of atomic-scale synthesis, quantum materials, and device-relevant phenomena. In his new role, Jalan will help guide the division’s financial stewardship, programming, and long-term vision in support of its membership.

“I am honored to serve the APS DMP as Secretary/Treasurer, building on my experience as a DMP Member-at-Large. APS—and DMP in particular—have played a formative role in my career, and I look forward to working with the division leadership to strengthen our programs, support early-career scientists, and advance materials physics at the interface of fundamental discovery and technological impact,” Jalan said.

Please join us in congratulating Professor Jalan on this appointment and his continued service to the materials physics community. Learn more about his work at the Jalan Research Group website.
