Student Leadership Development:

LeaderShape Institute

Dates: Annually in January 
This weeklong program held at Camp Courage, Maple Lake, Minn. engages about 70 University of Minnesota student leaders—from the College of Science and Engineering, Carlson School of Management, and the College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences. Students will explore personal definitions of leadership, goal setting and future visions, collaboration, communication, teamwork, and more.

CSE Week

Dates: Annually in April
CSE Week is an annual spring celebration of science and engineering at the University dating back to 1914. CSE Week events are attended by CSE students, faculty, and staff. Events include competitions, professional development, networking, and social events. Visit the CSE Week Facebook web page. Audience: Student Engagement, Women in Science and Engineering, Underrepresented Populations.

CSE Student Organization Grants

Dates: Ongoing 
CSE Collegiate Life organizes a grant program to fund events and programs organized by 75+ CSE-based student organizations during the academic year. These events engage a variety of students from across the college.

Events:

SWEekend

Dates: March 2019 
A recruitment and networking event that brings 100 prospective CSE students/female high school students to campus for an overnight stay and shadowing opportunities with a current CSE Society of Women Engineers (SWE) member/undergraduate student.

Competitive Project Teams

(SAE Clean Snowmobile Team, GOFIRST, Robotics, Rocket Team, and more)

Dates: Ongoing
Student teams design and build new vehicles annually or biennially for national and international competitions. Members come from all disciplines of science, engineering, and mathematics. Students are responsible for the complete design, implementation, and execution of their vehicle design. University teams routinely receive high recognition in competitions globally and across the United States.

CSE Expo

Dates: Annually in spring
This “for students, by students” field trip event offers upwards of 1,500 visiting middle school students more than 30 fun, hands-on projects designed by CSE students representing areas of science, technology, engineering, and math in an open-house setting. K-12 Outreach:

Summer Camps (Discover STEM, Girls Solve It!, and Eureka!)

Dates: Summer 2019 
For students grades 8-12 who are interested in exploring majors and careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). During each program, a new group of 25-50 students will explore opportunities in STEM. Preference is given to students from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds in STEM areas.

Math and Science Family Fun Fair at the Bell Museum

Dates: Annually in fall
A Saturday opportunity for K-5 students to explore hands-on activities, exhibits, and presentations showcasing work by CSE student groups, research centers, and academic departments. is event is free and open to the public.

Diversity and Inclusion:

CSE Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) Initiative

Dates: Ongoing
Targeted programs toward women enrolled in CSE with the intent of improving retention and working in collaboration with women graduate students and faculty. Events include book discussions, social events, leadership and professional development sessions, and more. This initiative reaches approximately 2,100 undergraduate and graduate women enrolled in CSE.

The WISE residential Living Learning Community—approximately 40 first-year students—provides additional opportunities for engagement. Visit the CSE WISE Initiative web page.

CSE President’s Emerging Scholars (PES) Program

Dates: Ongoing
PES is a four-year University of Minnesota program that supports high-potential science and engineering undergrads—with a special focus on women, underrepresented minority, and first-generation students. Since the fall of 2014, approximately 20 new PES students have joined CSE’s program each year, with a total population of 80-100 students annually.

Experiential Learning:

Engineers Without Borders, University of Minnesota (EWB-UMN)

Dates: Ongoing
Students from across the college form project teams that work with local citizens to research, design, implement, and build projects and sustainable solutions in Central America and Africa. Visit the EWB-UMN website.

Solar Vehicle Project

Dates: Ongoing 
Undergraduate students from across disciplines come together to design, build, and race a solar-powered vehicle for competition. Since 1993, the team has built 12 vehicles to race cross-country events in the USA and international events in Japan, Australia, and Taiwan—finishing either first or second in 11 of these races.

CSE Winter Light Show

Dates: Annually in December (multiple weekend shows) 
The CSE Winter Light Show includes 100,000+ LED lights and laser projection set to music, some of which is written and recorded by University of Minnesota students. Held annually since 2011, this event is free and open to the public. The average nightly attendance is 200+ people. It is conceived, designed, and executed by the Tesla Works student organization.

Gopher Motorsports—Formula SAE

Dates: Ongoing
Students apply classroom training and knowledge in a real world, practical application. Students spend eleven months designing, manufacturing, testing, and driving an open- wheeled style race car for competition. Learn more about this project at the SAE website.
