Frequently Asked Questions

General FAQs
Will the jobs listings I've posted in Handshake be visible to students?
Job titles will be listed and students will be able to view in Handshake.
Can I post a company document to my booth?
The best way to offer company information is within the drop-in room chat, or within chat in individual appointments by sharing a link.
What accessibility and equity issues should my team be aware of?
Please remember that some students may be experiencing things within their home or living spaces that wouldn’t typically be deemed “private or professional.” You may hear other family members or students in the background, unstable internet access, and so on. Thank you for your understanding and adaptability in navigating these situations.

Customizing your schedules
How do I title my schedule to direct students to the correct schedule?
Students can sign up for a specific schedule. Below are a couple of examples. Each schedule is managed by a separate representative.
Example for companies who have reps hiring for specific positions:
- Schedule one: Mechanical Engineer - Full Time
- Schedule two: Electrical Engineering - Intern
- Schedule three: Mechanical Engineer - Intern
Example for companies who have many (or unknown amount of) positions:
- Schedule one: Computer Science Majors
- Schedule two: Math and Physics Majors
- Schedule three: Cryogenic Scientists – Physics Ph.D. candidates
How many representatives from my company can attend?
Ideally, you’ll have two representatives (at a minimum).
- If you choose to host a drop-in room (see below), at least one representatives needs to be available to speak with students in the chat room.
- Any additional representatives attending will have their own schedules. Each rep with a schedule will have full control over time slots, length of time slots, and may choose to only open their schedule for a few hours.
Can I prescreen students?
Just as with in-person fairs, recruiters cannot stop anyone from visiting their booth. The same applies for virtual fairs. We can arrange an "Additional Prerequisites" for a particular employer and you can pose a question that the students will be prompted to answer with Yes/No before they book an appointment. However, this does not stop them from scheduling.
Can I cancel student appointments after they have signed up?
No, employers cannot cancel student appointments. Though we don’t recommend it, if you need to cancel a student appointment, you will need to reach out to the student, or to the CSE Career Center to have the meeting cancelled.
What if a representative gets sick or is otherwise unable to attend the day of the fair? Can reps access all schedules?
Yes, each recruiter has access to all schedules for their organization. You’ll need another rep to take your place and gain access to the schedule. Because the schedule is tied to the representative’s email, you’ll need to reach out to support@careerfairplus.com ASAP.
Will I get a notification if a student signs up the day of the fair?
No. You’ll need to continue checking your schedule throughout the day to ensure you don’t miss a time slot for which a student signed up the day of the fair.
When can students sign up for appointment times?
Students can begin signing up for appointments in early September through the day of the fair. Signup will close one hour before the end of the fair.
What happens after you indicate that you would like to move a student forward in the process?
The student doesn’t receive any notification. It’s simply noted and will be indicated in the employer’s post-fair report.
Can I turn off the ranking feature for my individual appointments?
No. If your company is unable to rank candidates, we advise that you communicate to your team that they should not use this feature.

Drop-in rooms
What is a drop-in room?
Learn about Drop-In Rooms on the Handshake website.
Do I have to have a drop-in room?
No. The CSE Career Center will contact you prior to the fair to ask if your company would like a drop-in room. If we do not hear from you, we will not create a drop-in room for you so that students don’t enter an unstaffed room.
Can I pull students into an individual meeting while in the drop-in room?
No. You can direct the student to the list of appointment times and they can schedule in an open time slot.

Student profiles
Will students upload a resume?
Yes. You can view the resumes of students who sign up to speak with you.

CSE engineering co-op program
The CSE Engineering Co-op Program is a minimum two semester co-op program, with an optional third semester at the discretion of the student and the employer. Co-op students earn technical elective credit for their full time industrial work experience. Students are required to apply to the program, be granted admission based on eligibility requirements prior to employment, and work full-time for an approved co-op employer. Co-op students register for a co-op technical elective (distance education) course each work semester. This is not to be confused with other co-op positions that are not part of this program. For more information please visit http://co-op.umn.edu/ or email the Engineering Co-op Program at co-op@umn.edu.
