In Memoriam: Chih-Chun Hsiao

Chih-Chun Hsiao, professor emeritus of aerospace engineering and mechanics, died on Aug. 7, 2009. He was 89.

Born in Beijing, China, Hsiao immigrated to the United States in 1943 after receiving a degree in engineering from Tsinghua University in 1941. He received a master's degree in mechanical engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1944, and received a Ph.D. in physics, from the University of Colorado.

From 1947-53, he taught mechanics at Penn State University. After serving as a principal research physicist at Jones & Laughlin Steel Corporation in Pittsburgh for two years, he came to the University of Minnesota to teach in the Department of Aerospace Engineering and Mechanics. He served as a professor of aerospace engineering and mechanics for more than 30 years until his retirement in 1990.
