Instructions for CSE graduates

Please follow these instructions for the University of Minnesota College of Science and Engineering Commencement Ceremony.

  1. You must have your GradPass to cross the stage. You will receive an email with your GradPass on Tuesday, May 10. You can choose to download the GradPass to your phone, or if you wish to have your hands free to accept your diploma cover from the Dean, you can print your GradPass and hand it to the usher when it is your turn to cross the stage.

  2. Face masks, proof of vaccination, and health checks are not required for graduates and their guests. The University of Minnesota is committed to providing a safe and enjoyable experience for all graduates and guests attending events on our campus. Guidelines from the Minnesota Department of Health do not limit venue capacity nor require physical distancing between individuals. In accordance with Minnesota Department of Health and University of Minnesota COVID-19 guidelines, masks are no longer required indoors at spring commencement events. Graduates and guests are welcome to wear masks, if they wish. Graduates and guests should follow CDC quarantine guidelines if they are exposed to, or test positive for, COVID-19.

  3. Graduates should arrive at the 3M Arena at Mariucci at noon on Thursday, May 12. Graduates enter through the Sundet Lobby entrance on the southwest corner of the building at 1901 4th Street, proceed downstairs, and follow directions from staff. Guests must enter via the main entrance of 3M Arena at Mariucci on the east side of the building.

  4. Arrive in your cap and gown with tassel on the right. Wear your honors cord (if you have one). An honors cord is worn with the middle of the cord behind the neck and the ends of the cord hanging to the front. The graduation cap is worn flat on the head, one point of the square facing forward (like a diamond). Cap tassels are worn on the right side at the start of the graduation ceremony and flipped to the left side at the designated time when graduates are officially conferred their degrees from the University of Minnesota Regent toward the end of the ceremony. It is best to take your cap and gown out of the package before arriving at the arena to be sure you have all of the pieces, and to unwrinkle the gown.

  5. Leave valuables at home or with family members. There will be no secure coat check area available backstage. Please silence all cell phones and electronic devices.

  6. Gather by the sign designating your major.  The procession lines will form behind the person holding the major sign.

  7. If you are being recognized for multiple CSE degrees, you must choose one major to line up with for processing into the arena and also for crossing the stage. Your GradPass will only allow you to cross the stage once. All your CSE degrees will appear on the arena’s giant monitors.

  8. Guests should enter 3M Arena at Mariucci’s main entrance, which is the east lobby, 4 Oak Street. Doors open to guests at noon and no tickets are required. You may invite as many guests as you wish. ADA seating for guests is available on the concourse level. For restrictions on what guests can bring into the arena, please see the 3M at Mariucci Arena Policies & General Procedures for specific details.

  9. The ceremony will begin promptly at 1 p.m. and conclude at approximately 3:30 p.m. All graduates and their guests are expected to stay until the end of the ceremony.

  10. As the ceremony begins and you enter the arena, follow the graduate holding your major’s sign. You will be directed to your major’s designated seating area on the arena floor. To assure there are enough seats for all graduates, please fill in every seat leaving no empty chairs.

  11. At the designated point in the ceremony, the Dean will announce the “presentation” of the graduates for your major. The ushers will cue your major when to stand and begin lining up. Don’t forget you can’t cross the stage without your GradPass either on your phone or printed.  As you reach the stairs to the stage, your GradPass must be scanned by the usher at the base of the steps. Once on the stage, wait for the usher to cue you to cross the stage to receive your diploma cover from the Dean. You will exit to the right side of the stage.

  12. Additional restrooms and mirrors for graduates will be located at the end of the Zamboni tunnel on the loading dock of the arena.

  13. Guests are to remain in their seats and not enter the arena floor area to ensure a quick flow of graduates during the ceremony.

  14. When the ceremony ends, all graduates will leave the arena after the stage participants but not in any special order. You can meet your guests in the lobby or on the plaza. You may want to designate a specific spot to meet.

  15. Professional photographers from GradImages will be taking photos throughout the ceremony. There will also be a photographer (wearing a red vest) available after the ceremony on the Plaza to take photos with you and your guests. Participants who pre-register with GradImages before Thursday, May 12 will receive a coupon for 20% off should they decide to purchase photos. Visit the GradImages pre-registration website to receive your 20% off coupon.
