Board of Regents votes to extend CSE Dean’s contract to 2021

National search to begin in 2020

MINNEAPOLIS / ST. PAUL (12/13/2019)—The University of Minnesota Board of Regents voted at its December meeting to extend the contract of College of Science Engineering Dean Mos Kaveh another year to June 30, 2021.

“As dean of the College of Science and Engineering since June 2018, and as interim dean for the preceding six months, Mos Kaveh has provided outstanding leadership, working with all of you to keep the college on its upward trajectory as a national leader in science, engineering, and mathematics teaching and research,” said University of Minnesota Executive Vice President and Provost Karen Hanson in a written statement to all CSE faculty and staff.

“Dean Kaveh’s extended appointment, through June 2021, will provide valuable continuity for important strategic and academic initiatives and maintain CSE’s strong momentum in the final stages of the University’s capital campaign,” Hanson added.

Hanson also said Dean Kaveh’s extensive experience in CSE and ongoing leadership of key initiatives—including growth planning and the final stages of planning for major capital projects—continue to command the respect of the college and the campus. Kaveh’s extended appointment will help position the college optimally for the initiation of a national dean search next year.

Kaveh has served in various roles in the College of Science and Engineering for more than 40 years. Before becoming Dean, he served as Associate Dean for Research and Planning since 2005. Prior to becoming an Associate Dean, he was head of the University of Minnesota Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering from 1990-2005. Kaveh joined the University of Minnesota electrical and computer engineering faculty in 1975.
