CSE senior values mentorship, leadership and undergraduate research

Chemical engineering student finds purpose in community and hands-on learning
MINNEAPOLIS / ST. PAUL (04/30/2025) — A deep love for chemistry and math, combined with an eagerness to challenge herself led College of Science and Engineering (CSE) senior Olivia Peche to pursue chemical engineering at the University of Minnesota. The Appleton, Wisconsin native was drawn to CSE for its top-ranked program and the unique balance between the large campus atmosphere and a tight-knit community.
Peche, a recipient of the Joseph P. Matula Scholarship, CSE Alumni Society Scholarship and Gopher State Scholarship, spent the last four years making the most of every opportunity. Throughout her time, Peche was involved with the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, serving in multiple leadership roles including Outreach Coordinator, Treasurer and Internal Vice President. Additionally, through her role as an Undergraduate Research Advocate, Peche helped educate other students about the value of research and the opportunities available within the CSE.
After attending the CSE Career Fair, Peche accepted an internship with Sherwin-Williams’ Research and Development Department. She gained valuable hands-on experience developing powder coating formulations and testing them herself. She also learned how industry and academic settings can differ in many ways.
In both the video and Q&A below, Olivia reflects on her experiences at CSE and her plans for the future.
How did you pick your major?
In high school, I enjoyed all of my chemistry and math classes, which led me to chemical engineering. I had great teachers that encouraged me to be curious and challenge myself. Initially, I didn’t know a lot about what chemical engineering entails, but I grew to enjoy it as I progressed through my college experience. While challenging, I enjoyed all of my classes I took, which confirmed to me that I made the right choice.
What stands out about your experience in CSE?
The strong sense of community and the support from my professors has stood out to me throughout my experience in CSE. From career services to my professors and supervisors, each person has offered valuable guidance to help me advance in my career.
Tell us your experience with CSE 1001 and mentoring students.
I was a CSE 1001 teaching assistant for two semesters. I enjoyed helping freshmen navigate the transition from high school to college. This was extremely rewarding to offer advice to students based on my own experiences and know that I was making an impact on so many students on a 1-on-1 level. I have had numerous mentorship opportunities through CSE Mentor Connections and Rooted In STEM. I enjoyed making close connections to students and helping guide them through their own college experiences.
What are your plans after graduation?
After graduation, I will be moving to Milwaukee to work for Brady Corporation as a Process Engineer. I’m excited to use the technical skills that I have been developing for the past four years into real world applications.
