Akshara Molleti is looking for a hands-on career to make a difference in people’s lives
Akshara Molleti is embracing her college experience as a member of the 2024 Homecoming Court. Molleti, a senior from Apple Valley, Minn., chose the University of Minnesota to stay close to family while diving into new experiences.
"I was excited about being in a large city and all the opportunities that come with being at such a large school," Molleti shared.
Molleti began her academic journey majoring in biomedical engineering, motivated by a desire to impact healthcare through hands-on experiences. After discovering a passion for coding in a class, she decided to add a computer science major
Connecting with peers from diverse backgrounds was the highlight of Molleti's University experience. "The unforgettable moments I’ve shared with friends will stay with me long after graduation," she said.
Molleti is currently a Bhimani Family Scholar. The scholarship supports undergraduate students in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering. As graduation approaches, Molleti looks forward to working full-time in the medical device or tech industry. She is excited about being able to work on real devices and technologies that are going to impact people's lives.
In the Q&A below, Molleti shares her college experience, involvement in student groups, and what led her to a dual-major.
How did you choose your major?
I initially chose biomedical engineering because I wanted to get into healthcare and had a strong interest in medical devices. I was looking for a hands-on career that would allow me to make a difference in people’s lives. I added on a computer science major halfway through taking a computer coding class and really enjoyed it. Pursuing both paths has been incredibly rewarding, helped me deepen my understanding of key engineering principles, and strengthen my problem-solving skills.
What has been the highlight of your University of Minnesota/CSE experience?
Connecting with people from all over the world has been the highlight of my University of Minnesota experience. The unforgettable moments I’ve shared with friends have shaped me into who I am today. Being a large school, the University has been helpful in connecting me with people from diverse backgrounds and experiences and has expanded my overall perspective both inside and outside of the classroom.
What student organizations are you involved in?
Throughout my time at the University of Minnesota, I have been heavily involved in the Indian Student Association and was previously on the board as an event coordinator and co-president. I was previously on the Choreos Oreos Dance Club Board as an Event Coordinator, the Biomedical Student Advisory Board, and a member of the Social Coding Club. Additionally, I worked with the Multicultural Center for Academic Excellence as a kick-off leader and Student Coordinator. Outside of homecoming court, I am a Student Initiatives Assistant at the Student Unions & Activities office.
Why did you want to be a part of the Homecoming Court?
I knew being on Homecoming Court would be a great opportunity to connect with new people at the University. I was excited to have already experienced so many new things in my last few years, but Homecoming Court has led me to new opportunities. I have been able to grow as a leader, while working with other people to make events and the University of Minnesota more inclusive.
