CSE student wins University of Minnesota BizPitch Competition

Aerospace engineering student created app to help others learn math at a faster rate

MINNEAPOLIS / ST. PAUL (04/18/2024)— Simeon Shaffar, an undergraduate student in the Department of Aerospace Engineering and Mechanics and a Rose Minkin Scholarship recipient, won the 2025 University of Minnesota BizPitch Competition.

BizPitch is a University-run competition where undergraduate students have an opportunity to present a new business idea to a panel of entrepreneurs and investors. The presentation has to be 90 seconds, similar to the TV show, “Shark Tank.”

Shaffar’s new business idea is Xygos, a company that created a software application that can help students learn math intuitively at a faster rate. The app is already helping University students with first-year calculus. Xygo founders hope to expand to high school math in the future and incorporate artificial intelligence components.

Shaffar won two categories in the BizPitch competition: Crowd Favorite and the Overall Grand Prize, which came with a check for $2,000.
