Loren Terveen Named New Department Head

Professor Loren Terveen has been appointed as the new Department Head for Computer Science & Engineering (CS&E) at the University of Minnesota. Terveen previously served as the Associate Department Head under Professor Mats Heimdahl from 2019-25. His term will officially start in July 2025 and will run through June 2030.

”I am looking forward to Loren’s leadership and guidance of our department,” Heimdahl said. “He has been instrumental in our recent strategic planning and growth efforts; I am thrilled that he will get the opportunity to execute this vision.”

“It is an honor and a great responsibility to take on this new role,” Terveen said. “Our department has nearly 70 faculty, who teach thousands of students each year, and produce innovative and impactful research in all areas of computer science. I look forward to helping us continue to achieve our educational and research mission as we navigate today’s climate.”

Terveen joined UMN in 2002. Prior to that he spent a decade in research at AT&T Bell Labs after completing his PhD in Computer Sciences from The University of Texas at Austin. His research areas are social computing, human-computer interaction, and intelligent systems. He focuses on issues such as detecting and addressing bias in intelligent systems, methods for doing ethical research with online communities, and integrating intelligent systems into peer production systems like Wikipedia.

Terveen has taken on many leadership roles and received significant recognition in the research community. He served as President of ACM’s Special Interest Group on Computer Human Interaction (SIGCHI), as General Chair and Program Chair of the leading conferences in Human-Computer Interaction, and as a member of the ACM Council. He is an ACM Distinguished Scientist, a member of the ACM SIGCHI Academy, and a recipient of the ACM SIGCHI Lifetime Service Award, and is a University of Minnesota Distinguished McKnight University Professor.
