Mohamed Mokbel Named 2025 ACM Fellow

Department of Computer Science & Engineering (CS&E) Professor Mohamed Mokbel has been named a 2025 Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Fellow. Mokbel is a Distinguished McKnight University Professor at the University of Minnesota, as well as the CS&E Director of Graduate Studies for Computer Science. He is being recognized for his contributions in building scalable spatially-aware systems.

“I am deeply grateful to my mentors, collaborators, and colleagues,” Mokbel said. “I owe a great deal of credit to my PhD students—past and present. Everything I have accomplished has been made possible through their contributions. I firmly believe that each of my former and current PhD students owns a part of this honor.”

Mokbel is one of 71 new members selected by ACM for significant contributions in areas including AI for healthcare, computer graphics, data management, electronic mail, human-computer interaction, mobile computing, networked systems, robotics, security, sustainability, and many more. ACM Fellows comprise an elite group that represents less than 1% of the Association’s global membership.

“These men and women represent the top 1% of professionals in our association,” ACM President Yannis Ioannidis said. “I personally enjoy reviewing the list of achievements of the new Fellows because it offers a snapshot of what’s happening in our field at the moment. This year, for example, we are honoring members working in well-established disciplines such as computer architecture and software engineering, alongside innovators in emerging disciplines like swarm intelligence or scene recognition. As we congratulate the new Fellows for their accomplishments, we hope that their work will also serve as an inspiration to the next generation. We especially encourage those who are not yet ACM members to join us and become part of a vibrant global community.”

The ACM Fellows Program was established in 1993 to recognize and honor outstanding ACM members for their achievements in computer science and information technology and for their significant contributions to the mission of the ACM. The ACM Fellows serve as distinguished colleagues to whom the ACM and its members look for guidance and leadership as the world of information technology evolves.

Professor Mokbel is the sixth ACM Fellow in CS&E since 2006. Congratulations on this well-deserved recognition!
