[Hired] Now Hiring: System Administrator

The College of Science & Engineering is seeking a Systems Administrator to join its Operations team. The focus of this position is on automation, orchestration, and software configuration in a complex and highly dynamic environment. As this position is partially funded by the Polar Geospatial Center, this position will also be involved in administering that facility’s HPC (High Performance Computing) infrastructure. A successful candidate will be a skilled professional who is able to work as part of a team as well as independently.

This is a second-level System/Server Administration position (IT Pro 2-System/Server Admin). Other industry terms for this position include Systems Administrator, SRE, or DevOps Engineer, with varying degrees of applicability. This position is chiefly responsible for performing system configuration, maintenance, and design of new infrastructure and systems, both independently and as part of a team.

Responsibilities

  • Configures, installs, monitors, upgrades, and maintains IT systems software, hardware, and servers 
  • Monitors data integrity and system security 
  • Maintains operating efficiency and stability, security and integrity of all data and systems
  • Performs administration of basic user access, optimizes remote access and security access 
  • Plans, designs, and schedules the release and updates of all software, hardware, and operating systems

CSE-IT endorses a “Work with Flexibility” approach that encourages employees to select a work location where they can do their best work. This means that the person in this role has an option to work remotely, partially remotely, or entirely in the office; at this time, many team members have opted to work remotely. All team members will be asked to attend certain in-person work events during the year regardless of remote status. Regardless of work location, work processes will be digital and paperless. Team members are provided University-configured equipment and supportive technology tools, but the employee will be required to provide reliable internet access and home office furnishings if they opt for part or all of their duties to be undertaken remotely. However, this role is limited to applicants who reside in (or intend to relocate to) either Minnesota or Wisconsin.

Required Qualifications

  • Related BA/BS and two years of work experience in the area of systems administration. Or, unrelated BA/BS and four years of work experience in the area of systems administration.
  • Two years working with Linux (Ubuntu/Debian or CentOS/RedHat).
  • Experience with at least one scripting language (Python, Ruby, etc).
  • Familiarity with at least one configuration management tool (preferably Puppet; Chef/Ansible/Salt experience is also acceptable).
  • Ability to collaborate and maintain respectful relationships with faculty, staff, and students from a diverse range of backgrounds.
  • Ability to balance a workload consisting of proactive, project-focused work and incoming requests from clients in an effective manner.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with scripting and automation as it applies to systems administration.
  • Experience with version control software such as git/Github, Subversion, or Mercurial.
  • Experience with monitoring and data collection systems such as Prometheus, Nagios, or Splunk.
  • Familiarity with provisioning technologies such as Foreman, vSphere, PXE, or DHCP.
  • Knowledge of databases (MySQL/MariaDB, PostgreSQL, Oracle, etc.).
  • Experience with job queueing systems such as OSG, Condor, or Torque/PBS.

Physical Qualifications

This position requires the ability to perform the following: typing, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions. This position may also include long periods of sedentary work as well as prolonged computer use.
