Resolved: Service Degradation: Electron-based programs in VOLE
When
Monday, December 07, 2020
Services Affected
Virtual Online Linux Environment (VOLE)
Degradation Description
In the morning, CSE-IT made an update to VOLE that prevents electron-based programs (including Atom and VSCode) from running. VOLE can still be used for other, non-electron based applications.
Work Arounds
You can still use electron-based programs (Atom, VSCode, etc.) by visiting an Ubuntu CSE Lab computer in person or Secure Shelling (SSH) into an Ubuntu CSE Lab computer.
Degradation Updates
- 12/08/2020, 3:30 p.m. As of the morning of 12/08/20, access to electron-based programs (including Atom and VSCode) has been restored in VOLE. A notice warning the user that there is the potential for data loss should be displayed before the program launches. No action should be necessary to restore service from the client-side. If you are still having the symptoms described above, please contact CSE-IT immediately at 612-625-0876 or csehelp@umn.edu.
- 12/07/2020, 11:48 a.m. We are working to reverse the change to VOLE. We will provide an update when the change has been reverted.
