Professor Jian-Ping Wang: imagining a sustainable future through Niron Magnetics

Distinguished McKnight University Professor and Robert F. Hartmann Chair Jian-Ping Wang's research interests include nanomagnetism and quantum spintronics with a focus on searching, fundamentally understanding, and fabricating novel magnetic materials and quantum spintronic devices. His research impacts information storage and computing, and green energy and biomedical technologies (diagnostics and treatment options). A brilliant researcher with a strong entrepreneurial spirit, Wang has co-founded four startup companies—Niron Magnetics Inc., Zepto Life Technology LLC, Magtection, and Universal Magnetic Systems LLC.

Founded in 2014, Niron Magnetics developed Clean Earth Magnet, a rare-earth free magnet, using a proprietary manufacturing process. The high powered magnet can be produced at a lower cost, and in 2023 it was named one of TIME magazine’s best inventions of the year.

Currently, the rare-earth materials magnets used for high-performance applications are the product of labor-intensive and environmentally damaging extraction and manufacturing processes. Besides, raw material costs are unstable and susceptible to fluctuations in the geopolitical landscape. Niron uses commonly found materials (iron and nitrogen) that can also be sourced sustainably, and combined with its manufacturing process, an outcome of nanomaterial engineering, it will produce low cost high performance magnets.
