Dr. Tariq Samad holds the Honeywell/W.R. Sweatt Chair and is the director of graduate studies for the M.S. in Management of Technology degree program at the Technological Leadership Institute at the University of Minnesota. He also holds an adjunct faculty appointment in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. He joined TLI in May, 2016 after a 30-year career with Honeywell, for the last half of which he was Corporate Fellow with Honeywell Automation and Control Solutions (ACS). During his career with Honeywell, he contributed to and led automation and control technology developments for applications in electric power systems, clean energy, building management, the process industries, automotive engines, unmanned aircraft and advanced manufacturing. From 2015 to 2016, he also served as the first Global Innovation Leader for Honeywell ACS.

Dr. Samad was the President of the American Automatic Control Council from 2014 to 2015 and the President of IEEE Control Systems Society in 2009. He is a Fellow of the IEEE and of the International Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC). He was also the recipient of several awards, including an IEEE CSS Control Systems Technology Award, a Distinguished Member Award from IEEE CSS, an IEEE Third Millennium Medal and an Excellence Award from the Society of Technical Communications. He was editor-in-chief of IEEE Press from 2014-2017 and editor-in-chief of IEEE Control Systems Magazine from 1998 to 2003. He is the founding chair of the IFAC Industry Committee that is developing recommendations for improving university/industry collaborations in control and automation. He was the General Chair for the 2012 American Control Conference (Montréal, the first ACC held outside the U.S.). His service as workshop chair includes the International Workshop on Smart City (Hangzhou, China, Sept. 2013), the Workshop on Human Cyberphysical Systems: Control for Human Welfare (Paris, Sept. 2014), Control at Large Scales: Energy Markets and Responsive Grids (Minneapolis, May 2016) and the Trans-Atlantic Symposium on ICT Technology and Policy for a Smart Society (Minneapolis, June 2017). Dr. Samad holds 20 patents and has authored or coauthored more than 100 conference and journal publications. He has also authored one book and edited several books and reports. These include the Encyclopedia of Systems and Control (J. Baillieul and T. Samad, editors in chief, Springer, 2014; 2nd edition in preparation). He is the founding Series Editor for a Wiley/IEEE Press book series, Technology Management, Innovation, and Leadership. He was a founding member of the Board of Directors of the Smart Grid Interoperability Panel, representing industrial and commercial stakeholders. In 2012 and 2014, he co-led technology deep dives on advanced sensing, controls and platforms for manufacturing as part of the U.S. Advanced Manufacturing Partnership initiative.
