World-class research

From creating mind-controlled bionic arms to developing next-generation plastics, our researchers are on the cutting edge of breakthroughs in medicine, environment, energy, transportation, and much more!

The University of Minnesota had $1.15 billion in external research award funding in fiscal year 2021, a 31 percent jump that exceeded the $1 billion award mark for the first time.

Top facilities and centers

Our labs are matched in scale and diversity only by the imagination of our students and faculty. In 2022, we were awarded two Engineering Frontier Research Centers (EFRC) from the U.S. Department of Energy. We also have a new cryopreservation center, the first-in-the-world ultrafast electron microscope, an Institute for Engineering in Medicine, an earthquake simulation center, a fluid mechanics laboratory with the Mississippi River flowing through it, and much more!
