FTPI Oversight Committee Member Gloria Becker Lubkin
We regret to inform you that Gloria Becker Lubkin, a driving force behind FTPI's inception, has passed away.
Gloria Lubkin held an AB in Physics from Temple University and an MA in nuclear physics from Boston University. She joined Physics Today in 1963 as associate editor, was promoted to senior editor in 1970 and became editor in 1985, stepping down to become Editor Emerita in 1996 and retiring from the magazine in 2009. Among her achievements was being one of the first journalists to visit China in the 1970s to see their science labs.
During 1974-75, she was a Nieman fellow at Harvard University. She is a co-founder of the Theoretical Physics Institute at the University of Minnesota and the Gloria Becker Lubkin professorship of Theoretical Physics was named in her honor.
