Abstract

The US Department of Energy (DOE) has 17 national laboratories, and, over the last few years, they have emerged as the central AI workforce for the US government (USG). Now DOE is building a new AI program that could result in as much as billionsof dollars a year in AI infrastructure and research to support USG missions. New money means lots of new jobs for graduating mathematicians across the national laboratory complex, and one of the core taskings that the labs will have will be to continue to fill out the mathematical underpinnings of modern AI, in order to build the confidence in AI systems that is needed to deploy them in high consequence missions. In this presentation, we will discuss the current state of government affairs with respect to AI, some of the current research frontiers where mathematicians are leading the way, and new career and research partnership opportunities for establishing the scientific foundations needed to deploy AI solutions for the nation.
