ROCK- PALEO- MAGNETISM
Welcome to RPM, Dario Bilardello's Research & Activities page
Overview
I am a Research Associate Professor and contribute to the routine operations of the IRM. I am primarily interested in rock-magnetism, paleomagnetism and magnetic anisotropy. I routinely combine the three disciplines to determine the nature and reliability of paleomagnetic data, their mineral carriers, and correcting for known remanence biases. I am the primary editor of The IRM Quarterly newsletter and of the IRM's website. Please contact me for inquiries, or contributions, comments, and suggestions for the IRM Quarterly or website.
Here is the link to my Private Website.
Research Highlights
First successful anisotropy measurement technique for hematite-bearing rocks (Bilardello & Kodama 2009) and isolation of different hematite anisotropy contributions (Bilardello 2015);
First to use compiled shallowing-factor distributions to correct for sedimentary rock inclination shallowing (Bilardello & Kodama 2008) and to point out the method's drawbacks (Bilardello & Kodama 2009);
First to evaluate the elliptical uncertainty around inclination-corrected paleomagnetic directions based on compilations of shallowing factors (Bilardello et al. 2011);
First to evaluate the effects of inclination shallowing corrections on the paleogeography of Pangea (Bilardello & Kodama 2010b; Bilardello & Kodama 2010c);
First to evaluate the effects of inclination shallowing corrections on Relative Paleo-Intensity estimates (Molinek & Bilardello 2018);
First to propose an intersection of great-circles technique, fitted to VGPs, to determine common (re)magnetization events (Bilardello et al. 2018);
First to propose an MPMS HIRM-based goethite test, to separate different mineral contributions to the bulk magnetization between room and low-temperature (Bilardello 2019).

Duties
By contract, my duties are two-fold: 80% of my time is spent participating with IRM faculty and staff in management and supervision of the operations at the IRM. This includes, among other things, assisting the visiting scientists in their research, collaborating in the research of the IRM’s faculty members, staff, and students, sharing responsibility for routine operations (gas transfers, supplies, lab safety, instrument calibration and maintenance), and an increasing proportion of my time is spent building and maintaining the IRM Website and editing the IRM Quarterly, for which I am becoming the main contributor; Conversely, 20% of my time is spent on personal, independent research and professional development.
+
Research
My primary research interests lie in Rock- and Paleomagnetism, with a particular interest on paleomagnetic data fidelity. My dominant research line is in Magnetic Anisotropy, Detrital Remanent Magnetization (DRM) and its associated biases (e.g., Inclination Shallowing): I use magnetic fabrics to correct paleomagnetic directions and the corresponding Paleogeographic Reconstructions, with a particular interest in the early assemblage of Pangea and other factors which may affect paleomagnetic directions and their reliability. These interests extend to cover the acquisition mechanisms of DRM and the effect of anisotropy-based corrections of inclination shallowing and of Relative Paleointensity (RPI) data, and to include the evaluation of anisotropic distributions of paleomagnetic data (Shape Analysis) from remagnetized rocks in general. Other recent research topics include the Magnetic Enhancement of Soils, Environmental Rock-Magnetic proxies and the magnetic characterization of Volcanic Eruptive Styles.

DEI efforts
A list of personal Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusivity (JEDI) efforts
- In the Spring of 2016 I have completed the 10 required workshops and have earned the Basic Equity and Diversity Certificate from the University of Minnesota's OED Office;
- Following the above, I took the initiative to develop a Diversity Statement which I included on the IRM Website;
- 2020, joined the nascent College of Science and Engineering Diversity Alliance;
- 2020, volunteered to complete the Department's Equity and Diversity Committee website;
- 2021-22, proposed to extend the pandemic-era mail-in visiting fellowship program into a Remote Access Visiting Fellowship category: "To give the magnetic community greater access to IRM instrumentation, this fellowship allows researchers to submit proposals designed around IRM staff conducting measurements on their behalf. The aim of fellowship is to provide support to researchers with limited resources, limited (or no funding) or an inability to travel";
- 2022-23, proposed to include a JEDI workshop in the 2023 IRM Conference for Rock Magnetism;
- 2023, took the initiative to develop a Code of Conduct for the 2023 IRM Conference for Rock Magnetism;
- 2023, collaboratively developed the IRM's Diversity and Outreach website content and solely built the webpage for it;
- 2024, took the initiative to develop a Code of Conduct for the IRM, which subsequently benefited from efforts from other lab and IRM RAC members;
- Routinely contribute didactic articles to the IRM Quarterly newsletter, written in an accessible language, which I disseminate through an email list, the IRM website and other media (e.g., ResearchGate). For the IRM Quarterly collection in general, I have indexed the most useful articles in a dedicated webpage.
