Master's Program Tracks

Mathematics M.S.

There are two plans for earning a Master's in Mathematics:

Plan A

Plan A students complete a defined sequence of courses and a thesis on a topic decided by the student and thesis advisor. See Requirements for the Math M.S. Plan A.

Plan B

Plan B is more flexible, with no specific required courses and a comprehensive final oral exam instead of a required thesis. Mathematics Ph.D. students will complete the requirements for a Plan B Mathematics M.S. on the way to their Ph.D. See Requirements for the Math M.S. Plan B.

Emphasis in Math Education

The emphasis in math education is designed to give students the tools they need to become effective mathematics educators. In this two-year program, students earn both a M.S. degree and licensure to teach high school mathematics in Minnesota. See Requirements for the Math M.S. with Emphasis in Math Education.

Emphasis in Industrial and Applied Mathematics

Practical experience is at the heart of the emphasis in industrial and applied mathematics. Rigorous classes prepare students for the math encountered in industry, and students are required to complete a one-semester internship in an industrial laboratory.
