“Women in Math and Stat” Team Places 2nd at 2019 Student Data Science Challenge

The University of Minnesota “Women in Math and Stat” team placed 2nd out of 24 graduate-level teams at the 2019 MinneMUDAC Student Data Science Challenge. The team — Somyi Baek, Cora Brown, Sarah Milstein, and Yu Yang (faculty advisor: Professor Gilad Lerman) — also won the Analytical Acumen Award.

For its fourth annual data science challenge, MinneAnalytics posed the problem of predicting the price of soybeans in the volatile market of 2019. The project consisted of graduate students, undergraduates, and professionals in the working with real-world data, conducting exploratory data analysis, and building an informed model to predict the price of soybeans.

Mike Weimerskirch Receives Wolfram Research Innovator Award for the Minnesota Online Learning Systems (MOLS)

Mike Weimerskirch received the Wolfram Research Innovator Award in 2020 for his work on the Minnesota Online Learning System (MOLS). MOLS supports faculty and students with homework and quiz creation and grading, and with placement exams for over seven thousand students annually.

Austin Kraft Receives Fulbright Award to Conduct Language Research

Austin Kraft, a ’20 graduate with majors in Mathematics and Linguistics, was offered a Fulbright Award to travel to Indonesia to conduct a comparative study of grammatical binding in three Indonesian languages. Working with Professor Yanti at Universitas Katolik Indonesia Atma Jaya, Austin will conduct fieldwork at three different locations on the islands of Java and Borneo to elicit and document native speakers' binding patterns. He has previously studied Indonesian with a Critical Language Scholarship in the summer of 2018 and has completed research with Professor Hooi Ling Soh at the University of Minnesota. After his Fulbright year, he plans to complete a PhD in Computational Linguistics.

Kai-Wen Lan and Gregg Musiker Promoted to Full Professor

The Board of Regents has now approved the promotions of Kai-Wen Lan and Gregg Musiker to full professor. Prof. Lan’s research interests are Number theory, automorphic forms, Shimura varieties and related topics in arithmetic geometry. Prof. Musiker’s research interests are Combinatorics, cluster algebras, and tropical geometry.

Ondrew Tillotson, a CSE Undergraduate Mathematics Major, received this year's President's Student Leadership and Service Award (PSLSA). The award recognizes his outstanding leadership and service.  Among his many contributions, he is currently serving as Disabled Student Cultural Center (DSCC) President, and has spent several years tutoring and mentoring for TRIO Upward Bound and the University YMCA.

Anh Hoang Receives Beek Graduate Student Teaching Award

Graduate student Anh Hoang received the 2019-20 Aaron and Anna Beek Graduate Student Teaching Award from the Council of Graduate Students. According to the Council of Graduate Students (COGS), this award is given to graduate teaching assistants who have made “distinguished contributions to undergraduate education at the University of Minnesota by demonstrating exceptional teaching ability and improving the experience of classroom, laboratory, or studio instruction. The recipients of the award are chosen by an Evaluation Committee formed by COGS, and are based on nominations from undergraduate students."

Math Alumna works on Models to Help with COVID-19 Pandemic

Marina Kirkeide, who received her BS in 2019 in mathematics with a math biology specialization, is now working on an interdisciplinary research team co-led by School of Public Health Professors Eva Enns and Shalini Kulasingam, in partnership with the Minnesota Department of Health, to model the spread and impact of COVID-19 in Minnesota. Governor Tim Walz relied heavily on the projections based on their models when he issued a stay-at-home order on March 27, 2020.
