Anh Hoang Receives Beek Graduate Student Teaching Award

Graduate student Anh Hoang received the 2019-20 Aaron and Anna Beek Graduate Student Teaching Award from the Council of Graduate Students. According to the Council of Graduate Students (COGS), this award is given to graduate teaching assistants who have made “distinguished contributions to undergraduate education at the University of Minnesota by demonstrating exceptional teaching ability and improving the experience of classroom, laboratory, or studio instruction. The recipients of the award are chosen by an Evaluation Committee formed by COGS, and are based on nominations from undergraduate students."
Math Alumna works on Models to Help with COVID-19 Pandemic

Marina Kirkeide, who received her BS in 2019 in mathematics with a math biology specialization, is now working on an interdisciplinary research team co-led by School of Public Health Professors Eva Enns and Shalini Kulasingam, in partnership with the Minnesota Department of Health, to model the spread and impact of COVID-19 in Minnesota. Governor Tim Walz relied heavily on the projections based on their models when he issued a stay-at-home order on March 27, 2020.
María Sánchez-Muñiz and Adrienne Sands Receive President's Student Leadership and Service Award

Graduate students María Sánchez-Muñiz and Adrienne Sands received this year's President's Student Leadership and Service Award (PSLSA). The award recognizes these students’ outstanding leadership and service to the Department, the University, and beyond.
According to the PSLSA website, students are nominated and chosen by a committee based on their leadership strengths, accomplishments, and contributions to the University community.
Professor Svitlana Mayboroda Awarded McKnight Presidential Professorship

Prof. Svitlana Mayboroda has been awarded a University of Minnesota McKnight Presidential Professorship. The McKnight Professorship is one of the highest honors for faculty at the University of Minnesota. Recipients of this award are recommended by their college dean and chosen by the president based, in part, on their academic and research accomplishments as well as their contributions to advancing the University. Prof. Mayboroda’s name will be added to Scholars Walk in recognition of this award.

Henry Twiss Receives Goldwater Scholarship

Henry Twiss, a junior majoring in mathematics, has been awarded the national Goldwater Scholarship. This prestigious, competitive scholarship from the Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation is awarded annually to outstanding sophomores and juniors who intend to pursue research-oriented careers in mathematics, the natural sciences, and engineering.

Wei-Ming Ni Receives 2019 Outstanding Ecological Theory Paper Award

Professor Wei-Ming Ni’s jointly written paper -- “Carrying capacity in a heterogeneous environment with habitat connectivity” -- was selected to receive “The 2019 Outstanding Ecological Theory Paper Award” by the ESA (Ecology Society of America).
The paper is motivated by mathematical results and explores a key question in spatial population biology: “How do spatial heterogeneity in environmental factors and movement patterns determine the regional abundance of a population?”
The paper was written in collaboration with Bo Zhang, Alex Kula, Keenan M. L. Mack, Lu Zhai, Arrix L. Ryce, Donald L. DeAngelis, and J. David Van Dyken, and was published in Ecology Letters in 2017 (20: 1118-1128).
