UMTYMP Algebra Entrance Exam: Greater Minnesota
To join the University of Minnesota Talented Youth Mathematics Program (UMTYMP) at the Algebra level, students must take our entrance exam while they are in 5th, 6th, or 7th grade.
Exams are held on University of Minnesota’s campuses throughout the state starting in February. Qualifying students begin UMTYMP in the Fall.

Deadline
Registration for each round closes on the preceding Wednesday: February 12, 2025 for Round 1 and April 23, 2024 for Round 2.
Exam sessions can fill up, so please do not to wait to register.
Cost: $70 per exam attempt
Includes both the exam and access to a Canvas preparation site.
Scholarships for students with financial need are available. Please contact us at [email protected] if the exam fee is a hardship.
How to register
- Do not register for both rounds at once. If you are taking the exam during round 1, please wait until you receive your results before registering for round 2. You may register for round 2 only if you can't make it to round 1.
- Register using an account for the parent or guardian. Because of this, the email receipt will have the parent or guardian’s name and not the student's name. We will use the student's name for the exam itself.
- If you are registering more than one student, you must use a different account and email address for each.
