Integrated BS/MS Program

1. Eligibility Requirements/Notes

  • Applicants must be enrolled in the Mechanical Engineering undergraduate program at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities campus.
  • Applicants must have a 3.25 GPA in CSE courses (transfer credits do not count) is required to apply.
  • For Applicants who have transferred from another institution, at least one semester must be completed at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities campus, before admission to the program will be granted.
  • Applicants must be completing their junior year and have flexibility their senior year to complete the requirements for the Bachelor’s degree along with extra coursework are eligible to apply. This means that upon admission, applicants must be able to take at least one graduate level course per semester during their senior year (which counts towards their MSME degree, and not their Bachelor’s Degree)
  • Admitted BS/MS students have the option to choose between the Plan A/Plan B/Plan C degrees, but for the Plan A or Plan B option, they must have a letter of nomination from their Plan A/B advisor stating that the nominating faculty member agrees to serve as advisor.

2. Application Procedure

Students who wish to apply for admission into the program must submit the following to the Graduate School:

  • A Completed Graduate School application form
  • The necessary application fee
  • Original transcripts from post-secondary education institutions
  • Statement of purpose including planned area of concentration during Master’s study. Applicants are encouraged to see the suggested first year graduate student flow charts for ideas on courses to take.
  • Completed BME/MS Combined Course Projection Sheet that includes:
    a) planned courses necessary to complete the Bachelor’s degree requirements. The semester and year in which the courses will be taken should also be noted as some courses are offered alternate years.
    b) planned graduate level courses necessary to complete the M.S.M.E. degree requirements. The semester and year in which the courses will be taken should also be noted as some courses are offered alternate years.
    c) Courses which will count towards the MSME degree must be taken in both semesters senior year.
    One letter of nomination from a full-time faculty member who is a member of the mechanical engineering graduate faculty. Mechanical Engineering Department. The nomination letter must clearly state that the faculty member support the Applicant’s admission to the program. For admission into the Plan A or Plan B programs, the nomination letter must clearly state that the nominating faculty agrees to serve as the applicant’s advisor.
