Matt Anderson Receives Nugent Family Faculty Teaching Award

The Department of Mechanical Engineering is proud to announce that Professor Matt Anderson has been selected as this year's recipient of the Nugent Family Faculty Teaching Award.

The Nugent Family Faculty Teaching Award, established in honor of Dale Nugent's long-standing relationship with the University of Minnesota, recognizes faculty members who demonstrate an exceptional interest in and commitment to teaching undergraduate students. Recipients are selected based on student ratings of teaching and comments from undergraduate courses, as well as a personal statement addressing their contributions to undergraduate education.

Professor Anderson is recognized for his numerous and significant contributions to the undergraduate program in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. In addition to consistently receiving excellent student evaluations across the many courses he teaches, Professor Anderson has demonstrated an enduring commitment to curricular development, institutional leadership, and student success. His contributions include:

  • Developing a new course, ME 2021: Introduction to Programming and Numerical Methods, expanding the breadth and rigor of the undergraduate curriculum.
  • Leading a successful ABET accreditation assessment for the department.
  • Improving the undergraduate curriculum through his service as Director of Undergraduate Studies (DUGS).
  • Chairing the ME Undergraduate Curriculum Committee.
  • Leading Teaching Assistant (TA) orientation to support instructional quality across the department.
  • Serving as an undergraduate academic advisor.
  • Developing training programs for other faculty advisors.
  • Teaching a CSE Study Abroad seminar on two occasions.
  • Contributing to recruiting efforts aimed at increasing freshman admissions to the program.

Professor Anderson's selection reflects the breadth and depth of his commitment to undergraduate education, from the classroom to curriculum governance, from advising to global learning opportunities.
