Laura Bartels works on MNMask kit assembly

MSME Graduate Leads Volunteer Mask-Kit Assembly

Last month, Laura Bartels graduated with a master's degree in mechanical engineering and assembled kits containing 50,000 face masks for the MNMask project. The MNMask project includes ME Professor Will Durfee, who recruited Bartels to work on the project this summer. Bartels' start date at her new job was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, so the timing was perfect. She led a team of 15 volunteers that built 500 kits, each with 100 general-purpose face masks.

The face masks can be built using only a pair of scissors, a ruler, and a stapler. Bartels recruited volunteers and supervised the process of assembling 50,000 face masks that they put into 500 cake boxes, to be distributed as MNMask kits.
