Abstract

Nitrate-nitrogen (nitrate) is commonly used in groundwater investigations to assess anthropogenic impacts and map aquifer pollution sensitivity. Datasets and references specific to Minnesota and the Upper Midwest show the natural nitrate background concentration of groundwater in Minnesota is 1 mg/L or less. Concentrations above 1 mg/L indicate groundwater quality has been impacted by human activities.
