NEW! The John S. Gulliver Travel Award

Over the past 50 years, Emeritus Professor John S. Gulliver has built an impressive and inspiring legacy at St. Anthony Falls Laboratory (SAFL). To commemorate his academic excellence, leadership, and the lasting impact of his teaching and mentorship for his students, SAFL is working to create a new, permanently endowed John S. Gulliver Travel Award. 

Background: Emeritus Professor John S. Gulliver came to the University of Minnesota and St. Anthony Falls Laboratory in 1974 for graduate school, completing a master’s degree in 1977 and a Ph.D. in 1980. He worked as a research associate until September 1981, when he started as an assistant professor in the Department of Civil Engineering. 

Throughout his career, Dr. Gulliver held numerous positions of leadership, including department head of Civil and Environmental Engineering and interim director of St. Anthony Falls Laboratory. He has also received numerous honors and awards, including the Rickey Medal, the Hunter T. Rouse award, the Dave Ford Water Resources Award, and others. Beyond his academic accolades, John has enriched the lives of many undergraduate and graduate students, postdocs, staff, and faculty through mentorship, advising, supervising, and partnership. His care, compassion, and dedication to helping his students excel is reflected in their careers and accomplishments. John always encouraged his students and staff to attend and present at academic meetings and conferences, to build their professional networks and learn what others are researching. 

The award: The John S. Gulliver Travel Award will cover travel expenses for conference and learning experiences for undergraduate and graduate students studying at St. Anthony Falls Laboratory. Travel expenses covered might include, but are not limited to, costs to participate in a conference, competition, workshop, or other approved learning event that provide an opportunity for the student to interact with people from outside the University and augment their research and/or scholastic experience.

• SAFL is seeking to raise an additional $50,000 to fully fund this award.
• The John S. Gulliver Travel Award will be permanently endowed and can be awarded to students each year in perpetuity.
• Gift commitments can be made in the form of a pledge and payments spread across a maximum of five years. (For example, a total gift commitment of $10,000 could be paid $2,000/year over five years)
