Professor Lian Shen Named Fellow of the American Physical Society

The American Physical Society (APS) has elected Professor Lian Shen to Fellowship in the Society—a high honor in the field of physics.

Professor Shen, the Distinguished McKnight University ProfessorKenneth T. Whitby Professor of Mechanical Engineering, and Director of the St. Anthony Falls Laboratory at the University of Minnesota, joins an elite group of scientists recognized for advancing the frontiers of physics.

The APS Fellowship Program honors members who have made exceptional contributions to physics research, meaningful applications of physics, significant advances in physics education, or outstanding leadership and service to the discipline.

Established in 1921, APS Fellowship represents recognition by one’s professional peers. It is a rare distinction—each year, fewer than one-half of one percent of APS members (excluding students) are elected to this status.

Professor Shen was selected by the APS Division of Fluid Dynamics “for developing novel free-surface and multiphase flow simulation algorithms, seminal elucidation of the fundamental dynamics of free-surface turbulence, breakthroughs in classical turbulence–wave interaction problems, and innovative applications to offshore wind energy and air–sea interactions.”
