Biography
Dr. Katie Ballering is a manager and the preparedness capability lead at HWC, a consulting company located in Washington DC. Her work lies at the intersection of science and the practice of preparedness and works to bridge the gaps between the two. A skilled technical communicator, she works to elevate the importance and improve the visibility of scientifically sound, efficiently integrated preparedness and response efforts. Dr. Ballering’s experience includes innovation across the academic, public and private sectors. Through her work at the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota, consulting for federal government biodetection programs and her post-doctoral training at the University of Chicago, she has developed highly specialized expertise in biological safety and security and national-level preparedness policy development.
Dr. Ballering earned a Ph.D. in microbiology from the University of Minnesota. She completed a post-doctoral fellowship in high-containment laboratory biosafety and biosecurity management at the University of Chicago. Half American-Indian, Dr. Ballering is a proud member of the Bad River Band of Lake Superior Tribe of Chippewa.
