TLI Launches Its First Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Technological Leadership

The University of Minnesota’s Technological Leadership Institute (TLI) today announced the creation of a new post-baccalaureate Certificate in Technology Leadership. This is the first 12-credit leadership certificate to be offered by the Institute since its founding in 1987. Students will begin taking classes for the new program in Fall of 2023.

The new certificate is designed for STEM-career professionals, as well as recent graduates who seek to gain business acumen, managerial skills, and technological foresight. It was formally approved by the University of Minnesota’s board of regents last month.

“We’re very excited to offer a pathway for recent graduates to benefit from TLI’s professional development classes, while also providing an on-ramp to TLI’s nation leading MS programs,” said Travis Thul, operations director for TLI.

The classes will be offered in the evening for the convenience of working professionals, and credits can later be applied to TLI’s MS programs, should students wish to enroll in them.

The 12-credit program is built around eight credits of Management of Technology (MOT) courses. These are core classes required across all TLI graduate programs and are designed to ensure that students possess the knowledge and skills needed to become successful technology leaders and innovators across all business and industry sectors.

The remaining four credits of the certificate allow students to pursue areas aligned with their technological interests. Currently, this includes tracks for Medical Device Innovation, Security Technologies, or an opportunity for a deeper dive into technology management. Regardless of the track chosen, graduates will be able to transfer these 12 credits directly into any of TLI’s graduate degrees upon admission to a program.

Students may begin enrolling in the certificate program for Fall of 2023. For more information, visit the program page at
