TLI Scholarships Help Students Unlock Leadership Potential
Kumar Avizeet (MOT ’26) is no stranger to technology. In his day-to-day role as a senior manager of software engineering at Optum, Avizeet works with cutting-edge programs and advanced AI models to create new and innovative products. But throughout his journey from undergraduate studies to his current role, he began to realize that mastering ones and zeros doesn’t always prepare you for the less-defined skills of emotional intelligence.
“When we assign a task to someone, we really do not ask them, ‘Hey, do you understand what I’m asking and what you are supposed to do?’” Avizeet said. “We are missing the complete human angle and just chasing the technology.”
Seeking to develop a strong toolbox of management and leadership skills, Avizeet enrolled in the Management of Technology (MOT) program at the Technological Leadership Institute. Now in his second year, he says the lessons he’s learning have already affected his leadership ability and professional path.
“It's already shaping me now as a leader,” he said. “I’m now working to transform Optumers into emotionally intelligent coaches. The impact is already there, and it is all because of TLI.”
A recipient of two TLI scholarships — the Honeywell Fellowship Fund and the H.W. Sweatt Fund, totaling $20,000 — Avizeet was able to overcome financial concerns and focus on developing the leadership and emotional intelligence skills taught in the MOT program.
“You are not just funding the education; you are actually unlocking potential,” Avizeet said. “I’m living proof that your support creates a ripple effect in health care leadership and beyond.”
Avizeet will continue blending his technical and leadership skills at Optum by spearheading the design of a next-generation health care analytics data platform while leading a scrum team of engineers. His current role, he says, is an example of the essential skills TLI teaches.
“That’s where TLI comes in,” he said. “Blending technology with humanity. TLI provided me with emotional intelligence as well as strategic leadership skills, which are very important for me to be a successful leader.”
