School of Mathematics

The School of Mathematics provides mathematics instruction to students throughout the University in a broad range of academic programs, including physical and biological sciences, engineering, business, medicine, social sciences, and many other disciplines.

Tradition of excellence

The school’s more than 60 faculty members represent a wide range of research interests and backgrounds, and serve in leadership roles both nationally and internationally.

One faculty member recently served as the president of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, the most prominent international organization devoted to applied mathematics and computational science, while another was elected to be vice president of the American Mathematical Society, the premier U.S. organization for mathematical research and scholarship.

Faculty members have also earned a number of awards, including the President’s Award for Outstanding Service, the George W. Taylor Career Development Award, and the Guillermo E. Borja Award.

World-class academic programs

Offering undergraduate degrees in both the College of Science and Engineering (Bachelor of Science) and the College of Liberal Arts (Bachelor or Arts), the programs prepare students for careers in actuarial mathematics, computer applications, or mathematics education. Students may broaden career options with classes in complementary disciplines like engineering, physics, or economics.

A variety of graduate programs are available through the School of Mathematics, including M.S., Ph.D., and professional programs. Graduate programs provide specializations in a number of areas, including industrial and applied mathematics, mathematics education, and financial mathematics.
