The College of Science and Engineering is dedicated to diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) — and is committed to creating and maintaining a welcoming, inclusive community of learning and scholarship.

Below are ways you can partner with us to increase DEI in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

CSE Rise program

Peer tutoring, socials, and professional speakers

RISE is a new opt-in initiative that continues the mission of President's Emerging Scholars (PES) in the College of Science and Engineering and supports about 95 students who hold BIPOC, First Generation, Lower-Socio-Economic Status identities.

Sponsorship ($1,000-$25,000+) will help with operational expenses, including peer tutoring, social events, and professional guest speakers.

STEM Diversity House LLC

Peer tutoring, socials, and professional speakers

The STEM Diversity House is a living learning community (LLC) for about 35 indigenous students and students of color interested in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) to learn from peers, faculty, and professionals who have similar academic and career interests.

Sponsorship ($1,000-$10,000+) will support operational expenses, including providing housing/meal scholarships for students (~$11k per year, per student).

CSE DEI Leadership Showcase

Scholarships, networking, operational expenses

The College of Science and Engineering's Diversity, Equity, and Inclusivity (DEI) Leadership Showcase—which draws 200-300 attendees (students, faculty, staff)—recognizes DEI-focused student contributions in the areas of student advocacy, volunteer work, and engagement that have a positive impact on the college, the University, and the Twin Cities community. 

Sponsorship ($1,000-$5,000+) will support awards in the form of student scholarships, operational expenses, and networking opportunities.

Student employment opportunities

Operational costs

Sponsorship ($2,000+) will support hiring seven student employees to assist with—and help grow—the RISE initiative and CSE DEI efforts (both noted above). The goal is to offset operational costs and use a larger share of both initiative budgets toward programming and events for CSE students.

CSE DEI monthly newsletter

Company visits/events, job or networking opportunities

The CSE Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) newsletter includes information about events and resources. It's sent by email to about 700 undergraduate students in the College of Science and Engineering. 

Rooted in STEM

Scholarships, operational expenses

The Rooted in STEM program in the College of Science and Engineering brings together 11th and 12th grade students from historically underrepresented identities in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) to learn about STEM academics at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities. The students are paired with an undergraduate mentor—a CSE student who can share their personal STEM experiences.

Sponsorship ($5,000-$30,000+) will support operational expenses and scholarships for participants.

Student Organization support

Grants, operational costs, travel funds, scholarships

Identity-based STEM student organizations in CSE with the college to receive support for their initiatives and programming. We encourage companies to work directly with the groups—such as the American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES), National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), out in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (oSTEM), Society of Asian Scientists and Engineers (SASE), and Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE)—while also helping at the college-level to grow these student organizations.

Sponsorship ($5,000-$30,000+) will support grants, operational costs, travel funds, and scholarships. 

CHEM and CEMS seminars

Operational costs, event speakers

The Department of Chemistry and Department Chemical Engineering and Material Science regularly hosts seminars and social justice initiatives to engage undergraduate students within the College of Science and Engineering.

Sponsorship will support operational costs, including travel costs for guest speakers.

BME DEI activities

Operational costs

The Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) regularly hosts activities to promote diversity, equity, and inclusivity within its community. These include recruiting efforts for students and faculty, and outreach in local high schools with the goal of creating a pipe line to BME research labs and academic programs at the College of Science and Engineering. 

Sponsorship ($150,000) will support operational costs, including staff hires, event expenses, and communications materials.
