American Solar Challenge Display Day

Friday, July 24, 2026
noon-7 p.m.
Northrop Mall
84 Church St. SE
Minneapolis, MN 55455

Plan your visit

Catch nearly 20 collegiate solar cars lined up right on campus! For the first time ever, the University of Minnesota will serve as the official starting line for the American Solar Challenge — a grueling, 1,500-mile cross-country solar car race. Before the teams launch their journey across America, Northrop Mall will transform into a public showcase of cutting-edge engineering and sustainability. Come meet the student engineering teams from across the nation, check out their custom-built vehicles up close and learn more about the future of solar-powered transportation at this free community event.

Be sure to stop by the CSE table while you're exploring! Chat with our alumni board volunteers and scan our quick check-in code to claim an exclusive alumni giveaway.

Can’t Make it to Campus?

If you are living outside the Twin Cities or are unable to join us on Friday afternoon, you can still champion our student engineers from afar!

  • Follow the Race: Keep up with live tracking, daily route standings and official weather updates by following @AmericanSolarChallenge on Facebook/Instagram.
  • Support the Team: Fuel the UMN Solar Vehicle Project's cross-country journey and help them cross the finish line by visiting the UMN Solar Vehicle Project Crowdfunding Campaign.

This is a complimentary event, but pre-registration is required.

Show off Your Ride: Vehicle Showcase

Following up on last year's success, we're bringing back an informal vehicle showcase to this year's gathering. It's open to cars, motorcycles, and any unique or interesting vehicle you’re proud to show off. Plus, the UMN Solar Vehicle Project's latest car will be there, fresh off competing in the American Solar Challenge!

In the spirit of Sociable Cider Werks — a Northeast Minneapolis cidery known for their welcoming atmosphere and playful cycling references (just check out the names of their ciders!) — we’re celebrating the creativity and mechanical ingenuity that runs deep in the CSE community. Whether it’s antique, vintage, hot rod, exotic, or custom-built, bring your ride and join the fun. No judging, no pressure — just a relaxed way to share your passion and spark conversations.

Save the Date: CSE Homecoming Celebration

Friday, Oct. 23, 2026
4-6 p.m.
Walter Library
117 Pleasant St. SE
Minneapolis, MN 55455

Join fellow College of Science and Engineering (CSE) alumni and friends for one of the University of Minnesota’s most spirited traditions—the Homecoming Parade! Kick off the evening at Walter Library with light refreshments, a cash bar, and family-friendly activities before the parade officially begins at 6:30 p.m. All alumni attendees will receive a special Homecoming giveaway (while supplies last).

Want to be part of the action? March with us in the parade! Walking in the procession is one of the most fun ways to experience Homecoming. You'll walk alongside CSE student groups and the UMN Formula SAE team with their cars! We'll depart Walter Library at 5:30 p.m. to head to the staging area. Be ready for about a mile of walking, including the parade itself (University Avenue between 12th Avenue SE and Walnut Street).

Happy on the sidelines? Pick up a CSE pom pom, find a spot on University Avenue, and cheer us on.
