Scarlata named Distinguished McKnight Professor

Claudia Scarlata was named as a 2022 Distinguished McKnight Professor. She was recognized for her significant contributions to the study of the sources responsible for the last major transformation of the Universe, only a few hundred million years after the Big Bang, and to our understanding of the processes that regulate the growth of galaxies over cosmic time.

Rusack part of effort that could help improve AI models

School of Physics and Astronomy Professor Roger Rusack is part of an effort to make data usable across multiple disciplines. It is hoped that doing so will allow scientists outside of Rusack’s area of experimental particle physics to build better algorithms and solve problems using artificial intelligence.

Laboratory Manager Retires

William “Bill” Miller recently retired from his position as Laboratory Manager at the Ash River research facility in northern Minnesota. Miller began working for the School in 1987 His career at the School began with what was supposed to be a temporary 6-8 week job that lasted for 34 years. Miller was working in civil construction in Ely, Minnesota–building houses, roads and septic systems–when he was brought in to help inspect some work being done for Professor Marvin Marshak on the Soudan II neutrino experiment in an old iron mine near Tower, Minnesota.
Focus on Nano Microscopy: New Faculty member develops tools to unlock novel physics

Alex McLeod is a new faculty member in Condensed Matter Experimental Physics at the School. His area of focus is materials, which he studies with nano-scale microscopes.
