Physicists go to extremes in the hunt for dark matter

In the hunt for one of nature’s most elusive substances – dark matter, which makes up 85% of all matter in the universe – scientists are going to extremes. Deep underground and chilled to near absolute zero, the Super Cryogenic Dark Matter Search (SuperCDMS) SNOLAB – one of the world’s most sensitive dark matter searches – has begun collecting its very first scientific data, following a six month commissioning period for the newly installed experiment.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering is proud to announce that Dr. Lakshya Gangwar, a postdoctoral associate in the department and a Ph.D. alumnus, has received the inaugural Ernest G. Cravalho Award from the Society for Cryobiology. The award was presented at CRYO2026, the society’s annual meeting, held July 15–17 at the University of Washington in Seattle.
