Biomedical engineering student competes in Final Four for Gopher gymnastics team
First NCAA championship appearance for the women’s program
MINNEAPOLIS / ST. PAUL (04/23/2026) — Biomedical engineering student Leah Gonsiorowski has dreamed of competing in the Final Four at the NCAA tournament — and that dream turned into a reality this past weekend.
In the Q+A below, the Wisconsin native, discusses the significance of competing in the program’s first Final Four on April 16, 2026 and shares why she chose the University of Minnesota and biomedical engineering.
How does it feel being part of the team that went to the first Final Four in the team’s history?
No words could come close to what this accomplishment has meant to me, this team, and the program. It is truly an honor to be a part of a history-making team, and this is a moment in my athletic career I will never forget.
This accomplishment was so much bigger than the current roster, but a representation of the unwavering support that revolves around our program, especially from our alumni.
Competing in the Final Four at the national championship was something I dreamed about as a young gymnast, and I am still in awe that this dream has become a reality. I am beyond grateful to have contributed to this moment in our program’s history, and I am looking forward to the history we continue to make in the years to come.
Why did you choose your major?
My decision to study biomedical engineering was much influenced by my athletic background. Throughout my athletic career, I’ve had a fair share of injuries and physical setbacks. I owe it to the innovation of biomedical engineers and medical researchers who have developed technologies that were fundamental in my return to sport.
Gymnastics is something that brings me a lot of joy, and I believe that medical setbacks should not be something that hinders individuals from finding genuine happiness. I am passionate about developing innovative medical technologies that help people return to doing what they love and empower others to pursue their passions despite medical challenges.
Why did you choose the University of Minnesota?
It’s hard to imagine pursuing my academic and athletic goals anywhere other than Minnesota. I take great pride in my commitment to academics, and the University of Minnesota provides exceptional resources necessary to succeed in a rigorous career path while participating in high-level athletics.
What stands out the most to me is the University’s emphasis on professional development. There are endless opportunities to engage in research and network with career professionals to begin building your resume early on in your academic career. This reflects the University’s intentions of not only developing who you are as a student, but who you can become as a leader to make an impact in your field. Minnesota is a place to pursue excellence and grow in every aspect of my life, and that is something I truly value.
