College of Science and Engineering makes progress toward growth

Overall undergraduate enrollment and first-year class hit all-time high

MINNEAPOLIS / ST. PAUL (10/30/2025) — Recently released final enrollment numbers for Fall 2025 show that the University of Minnesota College of Science and Engineering (CSE) welcomed the largest undergraduate study body in history, as well as the largest first-year class.

  • Fall undergraduate enrollment reached 6,529, a 12% increase in three years—well on the way to reaching the college’s goal to grow the undergraduate student population 20 percent from 2023-2028 to meet increasing workforce demands.
  • First-year student enrollment also hit an all-time high of 1,695. This is 38% higher than five years ago and 58% higher than 10 years ago.
  • CSE also saw a slight increase in its graduate student enrollment to 2,710 this fall, the highest number since 2018.

Overall this fall, University of Minnesota Twin Cities enrollment hit 57,879 with 7,180 first-year undergraduate students. Incoming students are arriving from more than 60 countries, 49 U.S. states and Washington D.C. While this class of University of Minnesota students brings diverse, global experiences to our campuses, just over two-thirds of new students hail from Minnesota.

“As the University of Minnesota embarks on its 174th year, we are energized by our land-grant mission of distinguished education, groundbreaking research and service to our communities,” said President Rebecca Cunningham. “I am so proud to welcome new and returning students to our statewide university community, where together we will write the next chapter with a bold vision that builds prosperity and improves the lives of Minnesotans, the nation and the world.”

Thanks to long-standing investments in student financial aid, the University of Minnesota provides a world-class education at the lowest actual cost of any four-year college in Minnesota for students from lower- and middle-income households.
