AI for everyone: Learn to build software using the latest AI tools

A new way to learn AI at CSE!

The Department of Computer Science & Engineering is launching a new artificial intelligence (AI) course: CSCI 2521- Thinking with Machines: The Art, Science and Ethics of AI, with a one-credit companion course for beginners.

This course is an introduction to AI science, AI ethics and AI-assisted coding with no prerequisites, and is open to everyone at the University. All are welcome, whether you are an experienced coder or a complete beginner. If you have limited programming experience and want to learn how AI works, and how to use it effectively and responsibly, then this course is for you! Experienced coders wanting to learn the latest AI coding tools are also welcome.

Major advances in AI are changing the way we build software. The newest AI models make it possible to build software without writing code. People with no coding experience can now generate complex code without understanding a word of it. But does the code actually work well? Can it be done ethically? Can it be done in an environmentally sustainable way? We will explore these questions and more.

In this course, you will:

  • Build a semester-long software project of your choosing with AI assistance;
  • Learn how AI works in non-technical terms;
  • Determine how to navigate and quantify the ethical issues around AI; and
  • Evaluate environmentally sustainable options to accomplish your goals.

If you are a beginner, you should also register for the one-credit companion course, CSCI 1521 which will give you the exact basic coding skills you need to complete a successful project in CSCI 2521.

You will leave CSCI 2521 with a clear understanding of how to be highly effective when coding with AI, and you might just get hooked.
