Department of Biomedical Engineering
The Department of Biomedical Engineering is home to innovative research and interdisciplinary education that apply engineering principles and techniques to problems in medicine and biology. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, biomedical engineering will be one of the fastest-growing occupations through 2018.
Tradition of excellence
Biomedical engineering is one of the fastest-growing departments in the college, attracting students who graduate to work in many local and worldwide medical device companies. Faculty researchers and industry alumni have played key roles in developing ground-breaking research and implementing innovative medical technologies.
World-class academic programs
The undergraduate degree program combines a broad foundation in biology, medicine, and technology. The Bachelor of Biomedical Engineering (BBmE) is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET.
Graduate students have access to more than 70 potential research advisors in the University’s Academic Health Center and the College of Science and Engineering. Students and faculty benefit from close collaborations with the University's medical school and teaching hospital.
Unique opportunities exist for research projects sponsored by local medical device companies.
The department also offers an integrated degree program, which allow students to complete both a bachelor's and master's degree in 5 years.
Faculty research spans the full spectrum of biomedical engineering areas that include neural engineering, cardiovascular engineering, cell and tissue engineering, biomedical imaging and optics, biomechanics, and biomaterials. Faculty researchers receive major grants from the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation.
Business and industry connections
The department has strong connections to more than 300 Twin Cities medical device companies including Medtronic, Boston Scientific, St. Jude Medical, American Medical Systems, and 3M. The department is uniquely located on the University campus at the intersection of the College of Science and Engineering and the Academic Health Center, directly adjacent to a teaching hospital.
