Night Moves

Look into nocturnal plant and animal behaviors. A talk by University of Minnesota researchers Tom Gable and Joseph Bump from the Voyageurs Wolf Project will reveal what they’ve learned about the secret lives of wolves, including the first-ever video of a pack fishing at night in Voyageurs National Park. Explore unusual and unique nocturnal plant and animal specimens from our collection—on display for one night only (get it). Whether you’re sketching, photographing, painting, or coloring, let inspiration be your guide. Tonight, we are open until 10pm to give you a chance to the stunning Museum of the Moon as the sun sets, when it glows even brighter in Horizon Hall. Curate your evening from a host of additional activities, including a DIY pom-pom creature craft, NASA spaceflight artifacts in Collections Cove, a show in the Whitney and Elizabeth MacMillan Planetarium, and stargazing on the Ruth and John Huss Observation Deck (weather permitting).

Special Guests: Voyageurs Wolf Project. 7 pm, Thomas Gable (UMN Fisheries, Wildlife, and Conservation Biology) and Joseph Bump (UMN Fisheries, Wildlife, and Conservation Biology) will talk about their work with the Voyageurs Wolf Project. Their research team has followed wolves from over seven different packs since 2015, and recently made headlines when they discovered evidence of one of these packs hunting freshwater fish. This was a previously undocumented behavior, and the research team was able to record the wolves fishing at night thanks to strategically placed cameras.  This talk is co-presented by the Voyageurs National Park Association.
