Gifts at Work: the Mississippi River

For most visitors, students, and staff at the U of M’s Twin Cities campus, the Mississippi River serves as a beautiful backdrop enjoyed from afar. But a closer look reveals a rich source of research, recreation, and academic inspiration, supported from its headwaters, through campus, and beyond by private giving.

(1) Jessica Kozarek, manager of the Outdoor StreamLab at the St. Anthony Falls Laboratory, measures water velocity. Donors helped make the StreamLab's 2008 opening possible.

(2) Originally from Bangladesh, Farzana Ahmed is studying stormwater management in the Department of Civil Engineering and planning to complete her Ph.D. in 2014.
