After graduation, I’m joining Guidehouse as an Actuarial Consultant on their Health & Human Services (HHS) team. HHS partners with state Medicaid and other public health programs, using actuarial science to help improve healthcare access and services for program participants.
The Actuarial Science track in the undergraduate Mathematics program at UMN provided many resources that were crucial in preparing me for landing and performing in my new post-grad role. The program’s dynamic coursework ensures students have the opportunity to learn about many aspects of actuarial science, like applied math, statistics, finance, and insurance. In addition to required credits, the program is built to support minors in Statistics or Risk Management and Insurance, and includes classes that count toward certain VEE credits.
My biggest piece of advice for incoming students is to get involved with the campus community in as many ways as possible. Actuary Club holds professional development opportunities with local insurance companies and networking spaces for actuarial students. I served on the Actuary Club executive board for two years, giving me the opportunity to form deeper connections with peers, grow my leadership skills, and shape the club members' actuarial experiences. The club’s annual Actuarial Career Fair played a key role in obtaining both of my summer internships.
Additionally, I completed a Music Minor during my time at the U and was involved in one of our choirs for a majority of my college career, which led to making more friends that I wouldn't have met otherwise and gave me a creative outlet to focus my energy on that was separate from math. I firmly believe that balance in your extracurricular activities is not only essential for making the most out of your time in college and boosting your mental health, but also provides you with a diverse background and experience that shape your college career.
