Focus: Psychological Safety
In Fall 2024, CSE embarked on a pilot project with CSE 1001 classes for first-year students. Instructors were trained in psychological safety practices.
When there is psychological safety, people…
- Speak up
- Express divergent opinions
- Bring up concerns without fear of repercussion
- Share failures and bad news
Benefits to organizations that practice psychological safety:
- More ideas for innovation
- Better feedback that include learning moments
- Better prepared to address issues
- More cohesive team, group, or classroom work
- More resilience to hold crucial conversations
Pre- and post-class surveys of students in the CSE 1001 course that were part of the pilot project showed that students’ sense of psychological safety improved from beginning to end of the semester, with small gains on all variables.
In the future, CSE Project Inclusion will expand this effort to more classes.
