Virtual Dean's Lunch and Learn featuring the Department of Aerospace Engineering and Mechanics

Registration Required ·All Alumni Welcome

Dean Kaveh and Department of Aerospace Engineering and Mechanics (AEM) head Perry Leo hope that you are able to join them in November for a virtual “Lunch and Learn." Hear news from the college, updates from AEM, and overviews of innovative research underway in the department.

Featured speaker: Thomas Schwartzentruber, Professor

"Atomistic Fluid Mechanics for High Speed Aerospace Flows"

When a spacecraft lands on another planet or returns to Earth from orbit, it must enter the atmosphere at tremendous speed. The gas flowing around the spacecraft is heated to thousands of degrees, it starts to chemically react, and damages the heat shield. This happens so rapidly that fluid and chemical processes are far from equilibrium and conventional theory breaks down. Professor Tom Schwartzentruber will describe how we now have the capability to directly simulate such an extreme flow using only the forces between atoms as predicted by quantum chemistry researchers. A collaboration between the departments of Chemistry and Aerospace and Engineering and Mechanics has dramatically increased our understanding of hypersonic flow.
